Theft occurring in Minto graveyards
MINTO – Local graveyards in town have become the target of thievery as flowers and other personal items go missing.
“This is not only disheartening for families, but it’s also deeply disrespectful to those who are laid to rest,” reads an Aug. 20 Town of Minto Facebook post.
“Some various annual and perennial (hosta and iris) plant materials along with a hydrangea shrub and tree that we are aware of to date,” town roads and drainage manager Mike McIsaac told the Advertiser, referring to the stolen items.
“We have placed a police report of the incidents with the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police along with the social media posts,” he explained.
Asked if security cameras are to be installed McIsaac replied, “Unfortunately due to the size of the cemetery and the amount of traffic in and out of this area on a daily basis, cameras would not be of benefit in aiding these efforts,
“We are hoping that public awareness that this is happening is enough to deter this individual(s) from continuing along with periodic police presence.”
If suspicious activity is seen, town staff encourage the public to report it to the town by calling 519-338-2511.
“Let’s work together to keep our cemeteries a safe and respectful place for all,” the post ends.
