GUELPH – Three baby domestic chickens were found abandoned in a garbage dumpster behind an apartment building on Speedvale Avenue West in Guelph at approximately 6pm on Jan. 25.

An animal services officer from the Guelph Humane Society (GHS) responded to a call from the building manager who found them.

The birds appear to be approximately three to five days old.

On initial assessment, two were believed to be in good condition while the third was in life-threatening condition.

The chicks were taken for after-hours veterinary care and assessment.

Unfortunately, one chick did not survive. The other two are being monitored closely.

The GHS encourages community members that may have information about this incident to report it to the Provincial Animal Welfare Service (PAWS) at 1-833-9-ANIMAL (1-833-9264625).

“It is disturbing that these young birds were abandoned and left in these grave circumstances,” stated GHS executive director Lisa Veit.

“All of the chicks most certainly would have died overnight had they not been found. We are grateful to the good Samaritan who contacted us to rescue them.”

GHS advocates for all animals, and in particular those animals whose lives it can influence through care, education, community support, protection and leadership.

Founded in 1893, the Guelph Humane Society provides care and shelter for approximately 3,000 homeless, stray, injured and abused animals each year in Guelph and Wellington County.
