ELORA – Tour de Elora, back for its 5th year, is now entering the home stretch.

Following a kick-off at the Elora Centre for the Arts last month, participants have been actively involved in the “10 for 10” push during the month of October, aiming to collectively reach 10,000km through walking, running or cycling and to raise $10,000.

All proceeds from the event will support the Cancer Centre at Waterloo Regional Health Network, formerly Grand River Hospital.

There is still time to encourage your friends, colleagues and family to join and make a difference, officials say.

“We work to finish strong by logging our kms and putting them towards the collaborative 10,000km goal, and encourage donations for your efforts,” officials say.

Tour de Elora was started by Gillian Alton, an Elora resident, who at the age of 31 was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was started as a way to help other cancer patients undergoing treatment, and recognize the staff and volunteers that work every day at the Cancer Centre.

“Our community is lucky to have such amazing care close to home. Every step and every dollar counts to help those in our community dealing with cancer,” Alton said.

So far the local fundraiser has raised over $35,000.  There is still time to support this year, by purchasing raffle tickets to win prizes donated by local businesses.

Visit tourdeelora.ca for the full list of prizes and business supporters and to purchase tickets. Each year prizes are also awarded for the most successful participants.

Officials offered a special thanks to Centre Wellington 100 Women Who Care for a very generous donation of $12,700 to  support the cause.
