U15B Grand River Mustangs bring home gold medals
CENTRE WELLINGTON – The U15B Grand River Mustangs team was the only local team to bring home a gold medal last weekend at the Remembrance Day Classic tournament in Centre Wellington, which included 56 teams and over 900 female athletes. The girls started the tournament with a 0-0 tie against the Kitchener Rangers. Game two was a 3-1 win over the Tillsonburg Lightning and in game three the Mustangs fell 1-0 to the Windsor Wildcats. This set the stage for a rematch against the Wildcats in the semi-finals. Both teams played hard, officials say, but in the end the tenacity of the Mustangs led to a 2-1 win, securing their spot in the final – a rematch against the Rangers. The Mustangs scored the first three goals of the game but Kitchener pushed back and scored two late goals in the third period. The Mustangs ultimately prevailed 3-2, capturing their first tournament championship of the year.
