Volunteers prepare to resurrect pre-Christmas Elora Festival Book Sale fundraiser

ELORA – The volunteers who run the book sale that benefits the Elora Festival have a problem.

Their storage room is full, thanks to generous community donations of books over the summer.

To make space for more donations for their giant sale in May, the team is holding a pre-Christmas sale on Nov. 24 from 11am to 4pm at the Fergus Legion, 500 Blair St.

And it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in their sorting space on Maiden Lane.

“We got a lot more donations this year,” said volunteer Cheryl Yuill.

“Normally we have lots of space at this time of year but (donations) just keep coming.”

It’s a great problem to have, she quickly added, because it means organizers can resume their pre-Christmas book sale, which hasn’t happened since 2017.

They’ll highlight the Christmas items – plenty of children’s and adults’ Christmas-themed books, plus games, puzzles, CDs and DVDs. But it won’t all be Christmas fare.

“Volunteers are plucking out stuff that’s also really cool,” Yuill said.

They decided not to hold the sale in the warehouse basement space as they used to and instead the sale will be at the Fergus Legion just down the street. It’s nearby, accessible and has plenty of parking.

And if you’ve got a bundle of items to donate, you can still drop them off.

A team of 20 volunteers sorts donations one day a week from September to April in preparation for the big sale that usually happens in May.

Donations are accepted year-round except for May and can be left in the blue shed beside the building at the end of Maiden Lane, just south of St. Andrew Street.

The sale is one day only and cash only, so hit the bank before you go.
