MAPLETON – Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Shayna Morphy finished in the top five at the Ontario Queen of the Furrow competition recently at the International Plowing Match (IPM) and Rural Expo.

The 104th edition of the IPM was held in Bowling Green in neighbouring Dufferin County.

From Sept. 19 to 23, farmers’ fields in Amaranth and Grand Valley were transformed into a tented city, RV Park and plowing competition venue.

Morphy, who lives in Mapleton, represented Wellington County at the Queen of the Furrow competition, ultimately finishing fourth out of 12 contestants.

She told the Advertiser that’s fairly successful for someone who did not grow up driving a tractor.

“It’s not really something that I have a ton of experience in,” she said.

“So, it’s a pretty great honour that I was able to be as successful with it as I was.

“I wouldn’t have been as successful without my coach, Joey [Parkinson].”

The competition is judged on the contestant’s plowing, of course, but is also on a speech on an agriculture-related topic and an interview with the panel of judges.

Morphy said she has plowed just four times as part of the Queen of the Furrow program over the past year, so she is proud of her accomplishment.
